Week 3 - On product research and other excuses
From time to time, when you come to the shop, you may catch me in the back room, working on a model kit.
Instead of an office, I have a work shop set up, with paint booth and all the other goodies. I have my own collection of paint ready to go (Tamiya Color Acrylic, just like I sell in store), and a stash of kits waiting for their turn on the bench.
When I was a kid, I used to visit a hobby shop in Ottawa on a weekly basis. One of the guys working there was always sitting at the counter building one kit or another, often getting grumpy if a customer dared interrupt him. Some would call that unprofessional, but I saw it differently; if I wanted to learn some new tips and tricks, this was definitely the guy I wanted to ask. I picked up a lot of tricks just by watching him build.
Right now on the bench I have a vintage Revell kit, the Little John Buttera '26 Ford Model T sedan. I'm building it strictly out of the box. Anyone who knows this kit (and the whole range of Revell kits based on the same space frame design) knows how challenging it is to build; it's probably one of the most difficult kits ever. The end result, though, is really nice, if you get it right.
What do you have on your bench this week?
